OpenTTD is a transport business simulation based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe, Chris Sawyer's 1995 classic, and made free and open source by its community. You start a transport company, by default in 1950, and earn money by carrying passengers, mail and cargo such as coal, goods or oil between towns and industries.
The fun is in building a network that works: railways with signals and junctions, bus and truck routes, ships and airports, all paid for out of your profits and a bank loan. Towns grow when they are well served, and new vehicles appear over the decades. Choose from temperate, sub-arctic, sub-tropical and toyland maps or build your own in the scenario editor. This web copy is single player and in English, with sound effects and music.
How to play
- Press New Game, pick a climate and map size and press Generate.
- Find two towns or an industry and a factory that are not far apart.
- Build a station at each end and connect them with track or road, then add a depot.
- Buy a vehicle in the depot, give it orders to go to both stations and start it.
- Use the profit to extend your network and pay back your loan.
Controls
- Mouse: choose tools in the toolbar and click or drag on the map to build
- Right mouse drag / arrow keys: scroll the map
- Mouse wheel or + / -: zoom in and out
- Touch screen: tap to click, hold to right-click, drag with two fingers to move the map, pinch to zoom
Tips
- Start with a short coal route from a mine to a power station: it is cheap and pays well.
- Passengers and mail between two big towns are a good second route.
- Your games are saved in this browser only. Clearing site data deletes them.
